Last week I went down to Blanding where my parents (and little brother) live and got to do one of my all time favorite things--take a drive through Gorgeous mountains in the fall time. The mountains there have a lot of Quaking Aspen trees & Scrub Oak and the colors are SO Magnificent in the early fall!!
Quaking Aspen (or Quakies as I call them) are my favorite tree--when the sun hits them their leaves glow the brightest, most beautiful yellow color that exists. This reminds me so much of Jessica (my best friend who passed away from cancer a few months ago...Yellow is her favorite color & fits her personality so well. So I thought in her remembrance I'd carve her initials in one of the quakies. You see all kinds of names on the quakies in the Abajo Mountains--names, dates, so & so + so & so... well considering how many trees there are it's really a small percentage of them that are carved on--but it doesn't look like vadalism to me or bother me.
So Jessie's initials will be on the tree now for years--some last a good 40 years, some less--but I'm looking forward to seeing her initials in the future when I go up on the mountain there. They're in a place not hard to find.

Over the years the carvings get bigger & harder to read then eventually turn into just black spots.
This kind of looked like K T Aho to me (but I didn't carve it) ...I did carve an A, for Aho by Jessie's tree--that's all I had time to do. -- I would have liked to carve an entire "In loving memory of Jessica Ann Perkins, 1979-2008 & then Katie Aho on the next tree -- but Tommy was hogging the kinfe & I had to use a rock ...that & we had to get going.
I have a lot of pretty picures & fun things to post from our trip... hopefully I'll get to that before too long.

Katie I adore you sooooooo much!!!!!! Thank you for sharing the story; of carving Jessica’s name on the gorgeous golden leaf aspen! That is so NEAT!!! Now her name can live on forever in the magnificent mountains amongst the beautiful Aspen grove. You are the best! You will never know just how much that means to us as well as Jessica. I am sure she was by your side as you carved her name, making some funny comment that her initials spell out JAP. You two share so many special memories.
When I told my Mom to check your blog out she thought that it was wonderful and such a tribute. She wants to get the picture and make it bigger and frame it. I was wondering if I could copy the picture from your blog so we could do this.
I am glad you had a great time in Blanding and most importantly with your family. It sounds like you had a marvelous time enjoying the beauties of autumn. I am so excited to see all the things you post on your blog. Thank you again for being such a wonderful and amazing person! I love your new blog background it is so perfect for the season.
Cute. You are a sweetheart.
I hope someone doesn't take her initials as a slur for Japanese people. ;-)
